Collection: Malcolm de Chazal (1902 - 1981)

Malcolm de Chazal was a Mauritian painter and writer whose dual creative legacy places him among the most distinctive voices of the twentieth century. A rare figure who excelled in both the literary and visual arts, his work continues to be collected and celebrated internationally.

Though self-taught, de Chazal developed a highly distinctive visual language characterised by vivid, luminous colour and bold, saturated tones. His paintings most frequently explore flowers, tropical landscapes, and spiritual or metaphysical themes, rendered with an almost folk-art quality that belies their genuine depth. His works have been exhibited and held in private collections worldwide.

As a writer, de Chazal is considered one of the most significant French-language authors of the twentieth century. His celebrated collection of aphorisms, Sens-Plastique (1948), drew the admiration of André Breton and the Surrealist movement in Paris, and his writing went on to influence poets and thinkers including Henri Michaux.

His paintings have appeared at auction and are held in significant private collections, with originals typically valued between £800 and £3,500. As a cultural icon of Mauritius, his work carries particular resonance in that market, while his international literary reputation lends his visual art a provenance and collectible status that few self-taught painters can claim.
